Early Life and Education of Sebastian Berhalter
Sebastian Berhalter’s early life was intrinsically linked to the world of professional soccer due to his father’s career. Born in London, England, while his father, Gregg Berhalter, was playing for Crystal Palace, Sebastian’s upbringing was nomadic, exposing him to different cultures and soccer environments from a young age. He spent part of his youth in Germany and Sweden, where his father’s playing and coaching career took the family. It was in Sweden that a young Sebastian had one of his earliest formal experiences with the game, playing for the youth academy of Hammarby IF between 2012 and 2013 while his father managed the senior team. This early exposure to European youth development systems undoubtedly played a role in shaping his foundational skills and understanding of the game.
The family eventually settled in the Columbus, Ohio area when his father became the head coach and sporting director of the Columbus Crew in 2013. This move was pivotal for Sebastian’s development, as he joined the Columbus Crew’s youth academy in 2014. Over the next five years, he progressed through the ranks of the academy, making 103 appearances and scoring 11 goals for various age-group teams. His time in the academy system was crucial, providing him with a structured and competitive environment to hone his talents. He was a key member of the Crew SC Academy team that finished third at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-19 Tournament for the 2017-2018 season.
Following his successful youth career, Berhalter committed to playing college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the alma mater of both of his parents. In 2019, he played one season for the Tar Heels, making 17 appearances, including nine starts, as a freshman. His decision to attend UNC continued a family legacy, as his father was an All-American soccer player there, and his mother, Rosalind, was a two-time national champion with the women’s soccer team. During his time at North Carolina, he reportedly planned to major in psychology. However, his collegiate career would be brief, as the opportunity to turn professional soon presented itself, leading him to sign a Homegrown Player contract with the Columbus Crew.
