Along with their older brother, Kyle, the Johnson siblings were avid athletes, initially harboring dreams of playing college basketball. Kameron attended Northern Nash High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete, participating in both football and basketball. Despite his natural athleticism, his smaller size during his early high school years led to him being underestimated by many, including some of his own coaches. One coach went as far as to tell him he would “never amount to anything as a football player,” a comment that fueled Johnson’s determination to prove his doubters wrong.
In high school, Johnson played a variety of positions on the football field, including quarterback, running back, and defensive back, showcasing his versatility and football IQ. He eventually won the starting quarterback job and had a standout senior year, accounting for nearly 2,000 total yards and 19 touchdowns. Despite his on-field success, he received no college scholarship offers from major programs. With his football future uncertain, Johnson seriously considered a career in the military and even took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. However, a late opportunity arose from Barton College, a Division II school located just 30 minutes from his hometown, which was in the process of restarting its football program after a 70-year hiatus. Johnson accepted the offer, becoming part of the program’s inaugural recruiting class. Academically, he pursued a major in Exercise Science and Health Promotion during his time at Barton.
