Early Life and Education of Lewis Skelly
Myles Anthony Lewis-Skelly was born on September 26, 2006, in Denmark Hill, a district in South London, England. Raised in a supportive household, his parents are British-born with mixed Caribbean heritage, tracing their roots to Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and St Lucia. This rich cultural background provided him with eligibility to represent several nations, though he ultimately chose to play for his birth country. His footballing journey began at a very young age, starting at Hilly Fields Football Club in South London when he was just four, before moving to North London and joining his first grassroots team, Total Football Academy. It was here that his innate talent for the sport became evident.
At the age of eight, his potential was recognized by one of England’s most prestigious clubs, and he joined the Hale End academy of Arsenal FC. Parallel to his burgeoning football commitments, Lewis-Skelly was also a dedicated student, attending the Aldenham School in Hertfordshire. He successfully balanced a rigorous academic schedule with the demanding life of an elite youth athlete, playing for both his school team and the Arsenal academy simultaneously. Interestingly, football was not his only sporting talent; Lewis-Skelly was also an impressive tennis player and had to make a crucial decision between the two sports at a young age, ultimately choosing to pursue his passion for football. This dual-sport background likely contributed to the exceptional coordination, balance, and footwork he displays on the pitch. His formative years were characterized by immense dedication, a strong work ethic, and the unwavering support of his family, particularly his mother, Marcia Lewis, who would become a pivotal figure in his career and in the wider youth football community.
Lewis Skelly’s Career
Lewis Skelly’s career is a remarkable story of rapid progression and high-level achievement from a very young age. After joining Arsenal’s academy at eight, he consistently played above his age group, showcasing a maturity and technical ability that set him apart. He progressed through the ranks alongside his close friend and fellow prodigy, Ethan Nwaneri, with the pair even making their under-18 debuts together in a resounding 6-1 victory over Reading, in which both players found the net.
His name gained significant prominence during the 2022–23 season due to his stellar performances in Arsenal’s FA Youth Cup campaign. Playing a crucial role in the heart of midfield, he was instrumental in the team’s journey to the final. A standout moment was his dramatic, last-minute winning goal in extra time against Manchester City in the semi-final at the Emirates Stadium, a memory he cherishes as one of the best of his life so far. Though Arsenal ultimately lost the final to West Ham United, Lewis-Skelly’s reputation as a future star was cemented. In February 2023, he agreed to a scholarship deal, before signing his first professional contract with his boyhood club on October 5, 2023, shortly after his 17th birthday.
The 2024–25 season marked his explosive breakthrough into the senior team. Under the guidance of manager Mikel Arteta, who had reportedly been monitoring his and Nwaneri’s progress since 2019, Lewis-Skelly was seamlessly integrated into the first-team squad. His senior debut came on September 22, 2024, in a tense 2–2 draw away at Manchester City, where he came on as a late substitute. In a quirky turn of events, he received a yellow card from the referee before he had even stepped onto the pitch. Just days later, he was handed his first senior start in a 5–1 EFL Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers. During this period, Arteta masterminded a successful positional change, converting the natural box-to-box midfielder into an inverted left-back, a role where he could utilize his on-ball skills and tactical intelligence to influence the game from deep. This transition proved to be a masterstroke. Lewis-Skelly thrived, becoming a regular fixture in the team and making 39 appearances across all competitions in his debut season. He scored his first senior goal for Arsenal on February 2, 2025, in a stunning 5-1 Premier League victory against Manchester City, celebrating by cheekily mimicking Erling Haaland‘s meditation pose.
His domestic success was mirrored on the international stage. Having represented England at various youth levels from U16 to U19, he received his first call-up to the senior squad in March 2025 for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. On March 21, 2025, he made a historic debut against Albania at Wembley Stadium. Starting at left-back, he not only put in a composed performance but also scored the opening goal, becoming England’s youngest-ever goalscoring debutant at 18 years and 176 days old, breaking a record previously held by Marcus Rashford.
